Here’s my hack to get quick and real customer insights (not the fake AI ones) in less than 3 minutes.
Sometimes we don’t have time or budget to do in-depth customer research.
But, you still need to make sure you have a clear problem.
Why? If you're not solving a real problem enough people have, you'll never have a product that succeeds.
The mistake I see people make:
- assume that if they have the problem, lots of people will also have it
- letting the business define what the customer problem is
- focusing on a solution and then scramble to find a customer and problem later on
Here's a quick solution I use, that I think is way more effective and insightful than synthetic research (using AI to tell you what problems people have).
1. Find online forums (Reddit is a great starting point) where people openly discuss their experiences that relate to the area you're looking into.
2. Search for relevant discussions and identify threads with a high volume of conversation.
3. Add the links to ChatGPT and get it to summarise:
- Core problems people are facing
- Direct quotes to understand the context around the pain point
- Jobs to be done so you can understand what your audience is trying to achieve
- Unmet needs so you can see where current solutions fall short
In under 2 mins, you get a pretty good head start for some problem spaces to explore.
